Handmade Haven: Summer Artwork

Samantha’s last day of summer camp was last Friday, which is making the onslaught of fall seem all the more real. I’m not really ready for cooler temperatures and structured schedules. I’m enjoying the easy breezy summer. I’m finally starting to embrace hair that can’t be tamed and dewy (aka sweaty) skin.

I’m pretty positive that once gloomy winter rears its head, I’m going to be grasping for any bit of summer I can find. That’s why my handmade finds today are all summer-themed works of art. I like the idea of hanging a little masterpiece in the house that I can look at when summer seems way too far away.

Any of these lovely finds would do just the trick…

Obsession of the Moment: Mermaids

From the always-present fresh seafood options to the abundance of nautical themes, the town of Mystic, Connecticut (where we took our little getaway) is drenched in hints of the sea. My favorite little reminder were the mermaids. They were just about everywhere and reawakened an obsession of mine.

Of course, my obsessions always lead to online window shopping which I pretty much always share here with you. Here’s what I found…

1 LaFayette & Rushford wall decor :: 2 Design Toscano wall sculture :: 3 Art Nouveau hand mirror
4 Book Lovers Accessory bookends :: 5 Uptown Soap Co. soap :: 6 SPI standing mirror :: 7 Alex and Ani bangle :: 8 Design Toscano architectural wall pediment

Sigh. Aren’t they pretty?

While I’m kind of in love with the bookends, I’m pretty positive my husband won’t be. I may just have to settle for a bracelet instead. After all, my arm party always has room for friends!

Do you develop random obsessions as easily as I do? Please share, if you do–you might help fuel my next one!

My Week Through Instagram

We started this week off the same as last week: lots of pool time. My Ellie Bean likes to take a second to relax in her little chair, stuff some food into her chipmunk cheeks, and collect ideas for mischief making from the big kids in the pool.

There was so much pool fun last week that on more than one occasion one or both of the ladies fell asleep in the car on the way home. On this particular day, we had to make a quick stop at BJs. Ellie stayed asleep through a diaper and outfit change and (much to her big sister’s delight) slept on Samantha’s lap for most of our shopping trip.

This weekend we headed down to Long Island to visit Tim’s parents and get the girls to the beach. My little neat freak went wild and was so covered in sand that she left a huge pile of sand not only on the floor outside of the bathroom when we got back to the house but she also could have built a castle with what came off her in the tub (this was after rinsing off at the little shower at the beach, mind you).

While she went wild building a sand castle and an incredibly long road to it (which included a lot of shouting orders at her dad and grandpa), my usually messy monster refused to put a toe in the sand. I held the  stubborn little thing just about the whole time,  sure that she would eventually relent because she wanted to get in on the action. She never did!

It was hot, hot, hot on Saturday, so when we got back to the house, we got out the kiddie pool for the girls to cool off in. I had no more swim diapers (do they even work?!) and regular diapers get so huge and waterlogged (not to mention the mess if they burst), so we put Ellie in a pair of Samantha’s underwear to run around in. We couldn’t stop laughing at the sight of her tiny tush.

We left on Sunday afternoon (after Tim took care of an eyeglass emergency) and the girls slept the whole way home while my husband and I continually cooed about how cute they are.

On Mondays we always go to story hour. After listening to the story and doing the crown craft afterwards, my little princess decided we absolutely had to go to DSW and try on shoes before heading home. So we did. And she posed like a superstar.

She (of course) absolutely had to try on the most glitterific pair in the place. I’m not sure how she does it, but she finds the most sparkly pair every time.

OK, so this shot isn’t the best quality but I had to include it. Samantha has been wanting to do a sneak attack pedicure on my husband for at least a week now. We (not-so) secretly decided that if he passed out on the couch watching TV, we would paint his toes. When I looked up from my work at about 11:30 on Monday night and saw him out cold, I knew I had to wake her up. So I did. She was ecstatic. We painted his toes with a hot pink strawberry-scented polish. As Sam said, mission accomplished.

Last but not least, my buddy tried out a pottery wheel she got for her birthday while the babe napped yesterday. She absolutely loved it and I’m hoping to find a pottery class somewhere nearby for her to do next year. Can you guess what everyone’s gifts from Sam will be come the holidays?

Summertime Coverage

My daughter’s swimming lessons are starting up a week from today. This realization has kicked  my swimwear fears into high gear. Last summer I had just had my little bean and decided that I was only going to focus on finding cover ups that could take me from place to place. I was all about girl power and body acceptance. While I’m trying to stay on that train this time around, my needs are definitely completely different.

Last summer I was keeping one eye on my nervous five-year old in the pool while trying to rock my newborn and keep her asleep to avoid too much sun exposure. This summer I will have a much more confident six-year old who is already talking about adventures in the deep end and a 15-month old who fears nothing. I fully expect to be run ragged and am OK with that (chasing wild children counts as a workout, no?). The one thing I’m concerned about  is eliminating the possibility of a wardrobe malfunction.

I declare this year my Summer of Coverage. I’m not looking to be matronly. I just want to make sure I have some pieces that won’t leaving me pulling and tugging and fearing I can fall out at any moment. Because really, who needs a nagging fear of wardrobe malfunctions in the back of your mind when you’re trying to wrangle adventurous water babies?

1 Old Navy maxi cover up / 2 Splendid terry dress / 3 Lauren by Ralph Lauren swimdress / 4 Jantzen swimdress / 5 Old Navy striped cover up / 6 Athleta caftan / 7 Old Navy boyshort / 8 Old Navy shorts

Have you found swimwear or cover ups that you swear by? My hunt is in high gear and I would love and and all recommendations!

Take Me Away

My husband and I have been talking about taking a little summer vacation for the last couple of years but have yet to actually act on it. We’ve spoken about it recently and I’ve decided that this is the year we’re definitely going on a mini-getaway with our girlies.

To make sure this happens, I’ve decided I need to stop talking about it and start planning. I thought a great place to start was by asking you guys for affordable recommendations in the northeast. We live in NY and aren’t planning on going very far, basically a car trip and a few days away.

All this thinking about vacations definitely has me romanticizing the idea (click the photos for sources).

Let’s get real though. A family vacation will probably look a little more like the picture below than any of the pretty little photos above. Lots of togetherness generally leads to getting pretty sick of one another, no?

To be honest, I’d be perfectly happy with something in between perfectly blissful and choking each other in frustration.

What do you like to do on vacation? Are there any spots that you’re particularly fond of? Do you have any good family vacation stories that will make the rest of us feel better about our experiences? Share it all below!

Killer Cover Ups

I’ve been spending a lot of time at the pool this week because my daughter is taking swimming lessons (she fancies herself a little mermaid–only she doesn’t particularly like getting her eyes wet). All that time in a bathing suit has me thinking an awful lot about cover ups.

Generally we think of cover ups as something to hide our bodies behind. I mean, they’re called cover ups, right? We use them to cover our bodies.

But seeing all these women of various shapes, sizes and age ranges in different stages of undress has led me to say TO HELL WITH IT! My daughters do not need to grow up watching mommy desperately try to cover her body in shame (hey, I had a baby just under four months ago. I’m not exactly feeling svelte at the moment).

Instead, let’s think of cover-ups as what they actually are:  a fashionable way to get from the pool/beach to wherever else your day might be taking you without looking like a hooker at the grocery store. They’re also a great way to shield your skin from the sun if, for instance, your shoulders suddenly feel like they’re on fire.

Here’s a collection of super cute ones…

I love stripes. I love cardigans. Why not combine them in one nautically-inspired bathing suit-covering masterpiece? This Beach Star cover up is great for the lady who wants to inject her look with some glamour!

If you love stripes, but want something a bit more bohemian, W Swimwear makes this gorgeous sheer tunic. It’s light and flowy and the colors are like the sunset. Love it!

Speaking of tunics, how cute is this one from Milly? Love it! The jute embroidering is so pretty and if you’re looking for a darker color, it’s just as cute in coconut brown.

Going for something sexy? This Nanette Lepore piece totally fits the bill. The crochet let’s you see through it just enough, while leaving a little to the imagination–way sexier than letting it all hang out!

If versatility is the most important bit for you, you’ll love this Garnet Hill convertible cover up. Wear it as a skirt while you traipse down the beach in search of seashells and pull it up into a strapless dress when you’re ready to go into town for some lunch!

Another piece that can easily double as a dress to walk around town in is this pretty cotton voile one from Lands’ End. Love this color!
