90s Heartthrobs

Sometimes it’s kind of hilarious to take a trip down memory lane and take a peek at the things you used to be in love with. Sometimes you’re left with a warm, fuzzy feeling of nostalgia inside. Other times you’re horrified and can’t figure out what the hell you were thinking.

In that spirit, I decided to dig up some famous crushes of my youth:

TV/Movie Stars

River Pheonix, Jared Leto, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Joshua Jackson, Brad Renfro,
Andrew Keegan, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Leonardo DiCaprio

Rock Stars

Chris Cornell, Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder, Gavin Rossdale, Scott Weiland

As you can see, I head a definite type: the grungy bad boy. Not quite sure what that says about me…

Most of these little crushes were plastered across my bedroom walls with tear-out posters from Teen Beat and BOP (before I graduated to the much more grown up Sassy, YM and Seventeen). But one very special crush got a fan letter.

I’m talking to you, Leo. My best friend and I were totally in love with Leonardo DiCaprio’s character on Growing Pains. So much so, in fact, that we wrote him what were surely incredibly creepy proclamations of our love.

Before putting them into an envelope, we decided to steal her sister’s lipstick and leave our prepubescent lip prints all over any empty inch of paper we could find. We were sure he would write back to us.

Looking back on it, I’m pretty positive her mom never sent the thing. I mean, it was smeared in what looked like blood!

Anyway, this list is far from exhaustive. Who were your teen crushes? And did you ever send them fan mail?

  1. Ha! I also had a crush on Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Joshua Jackson when I was little – around five or six years old. 🙂 Then there was the most serious of crushes: Orlando Bloom. My best friend and I scanned every picture we could find of him from magazines into word documents and took our printed pages to school every day to sneak peeks during class. Later I wrote a short story for an assignment including Mr. Bloom as the main character’s real-life friend/crush. I think it all ended when three friends joined me in pouring our hearts out to him in a fan letter, asking for pictures and autographs, and never received a reply. Darn celebrities, stealing our hearts. 😉

  2. Hahahaa kisses over a fan love letter!! I was obsessed with asian popstars back when I was younger from Taiwan/HK and Japan, then it went on to Orlando Bloom! Ahh even wrote fanfiction about our love story!! I didn’t quite fancy him anymore when I learnt he was a smoker (boo) and that he had turned vegetarian! I mean, I wouldn’t know what to cook for him! 😉 Hehehe those were the days 😀
