The Power of Lipstick

Ladies, let’s talk lips. More specifically, let’s talk about breaking down and slapping a little color on ’em.

I had a couple of different conversations recently with other bloggers about how much good a little dab of color will do ya when it comes to your lips. Somehow this one minor step can bring your whole look together.

Where’s the proof, you ask? Why, it’s right here:

This is what I looked like trying to get out of the house the other morning before adding color to my lips. Disheveled. Wild eyed. In need of chocolate before the clock even struck 10 am.

Add just a dab of Revlon Colorburst lip butter in Tutti Frutti and poof! I’m an actual human being ready to emerge into a world where I may just run into other grownups. My lip color is by no means overwhelming. It’s subtle and shimmery but it tells the outside world that I’m more than just a house frau with a herd of wee ones hanging from my teat. I mean, come on. It’s even a coral-y color, which is so on trend.

In case you were wondering, this trick also works well on young children:

To make sure the magic wasn’t just in the lip butter, Samantha put on Cover Girl Nature Luxe gloss in anemone. As you can see, it was just as magical.

She enjoyed it’s smoothness and the fact that it made her lips more red than mine (which she told me in a little bit of a “nanny nanny poo poo” voice).

Lest you think this trick is a magical cure all for all creatures, don’t get ahead of yourself. Babies are a whole different ball of wax.

Elyssa emerged from the application process still naked with a drooly chin, scraggly hair and Burt’s Bees breath. Some things are just a lost cause.

I Like Big Buns and I Cannot Lie.

via Pinterest

The bun. Nothing is easier for a frantic mom trying to get out of the house while kids are clawing at her thighs asking for snacks and projects and trips to Disneyland. The fact that they are all the rage at the moment makes them so much sweeter. You mean my messy top knot is actually something people try for at the moment? Score!

For me, messy is key. I look like an alien invading from a foreign galaxy when my hair is all perfect and pulled tightly to my head. Luckily, messy is also in!

Check out these takes on my beloved bun for a little summertime hair inspiration… Continue reading

5 Summer Beauty Essentials

Coppertone Water Babies Pure & Simple Sunscreen: Hearing of so many 20-somethings (and younger!) with skin cancer has made me an SPF nazi. I’m all about the sunscreen in the summer and whatever I layer onto my babies, I also layer on myself. This high SPF, tear free sunscreen is also fragrance and dye free which makes it even better in my opinion.

Burt’s Bees Coconut Foot Creme: Summertime presents us ladies with a catch 22 of sorts. We get to where the strappy sandals and flip flops that we adore, but our feet take a serious beating. This foot creme can help you out. Slather some on before you go to bed and put on some cotton socks. Not only does it smell delicious and tropical, but your feet will be noticeable softer by morning.

Dove Roll On Deodorant: I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to have to worry about deodorant streaks when I go sleeveless during the summer. Whether clumped in your pit or all over your shirt, it’s definitely not an attractive sight. Roll-on deodorant eliminates that fear. This particular kind goes on completely clear from the start and works all day.

Josie Maran Argan Oil Color Stick: One thing that’s important to me during the summer is no fuss products. I want something that I can put on quickly as I’m running out the door. And if it can multitask and it’s all natural and full of antioxidants? Even better! This color stick adds a healthy pop of color to your lips and cheeks (I sometimes even use it on my eyes!) within seconds.

Burt’s Bees Sun Protecting Lip Balm: You can’t forget those lips, ladies! They can take a beating from the sun and one thing I do not want is sunburned lips. Burt’s Bees is my tried and true go to.

Do you use any essentials I may have missed? I’m always looking for newbies so your suggestions are more than welcome!!!

Bright, Bold Summery Lips

I’m generally not a lipstick person. It’s mostly because the interior half of my bottom lip loses the color almost immediately, making me constantly paranoid that I’m suffering from an extreme case of stripe lip. And why wear something that makes you totally self conscious?

The thing is, I’m kind of obsessed with bold lips right now. It seems to go hand in hand with my hardcore coral crush. I want bright, bold coral-colored lips. I don’t know why, but I love it!

I recently bought two new glossy lipsticks to give this summery trend a try. I picked up Cover Girl NatureLuxe gloss balm in anemone and Revlon Colorburst lip butter in Tutti Frutti. Both give you a glossy punch of color and leave your lips feeling smooth an hydrated (that’s a major pet peeve of mine: lip color that makes your lips feel all dry and gross).

The Cover Girl product has SPF 15, which I thought was kind of awesome. It goes on nice and smooth and is sort of a cherry color. Depending on how much you layer it on, it can be subtle enough to say “OK fiiiiiine” to your begging six-year old who won’t stop pulling on your leg until you let her put a little on or it can be a little bolder for momma.

The Revlon product is definitely the bolder of the two. But while I like the color and the smooth, creamy coverage I was thoroughly disappointed with the fact that a chunk of it slid off the top during my first application, leaving me with a chunky smooshed mess. I would absolutely swear by their lip butters if it wasn’t for that teensy little malfunction. Now every time I got to put it on there are chunks breaking off on my lips, which is pretty annoying. I’m hoping I just got a defective one but I’m not so sure I want to spend the extra money to see.

Have any of you tried Revlon lip butters? I’m interested in seeing if anyone else had the same issue. And if not, tell me what your go-to lip brand is!

Fashion Inspired by Nail Art

I was cruising through my wedding blog feed the other day and came across a fab post on Grey Likes Weddings that paired photos of manicures with complementary bouquets. I thought that was a pretty genius idea and it immediately made me think about how all of the great nail art that’s out there right now can inspire fashion.

I put together two outfits that were designed specifically around awesome manicures I found around the internets:

nails / ASOS cami / Forever21 shorts / Dorothy Perkins necklace

nails / Kate Spade romper / Kate Spade bag / Sam Edelman sandal

What do you think? Would you pull together an outfit around your manicure or do you think that’s just crazy talk? I happen to think it’s kind of fun…

Trim Your Own Bangs?!

I got slightly too excited when I saw this Refinery 29 video this morning. I decided to go with bangs a few months ago and have been struggling to keep them in check ever since. Heading to the salon every couple of weeks for upkeep is just not going to happen.

I’m definitely going to give this a try later this week! I’ll post pictures to let you lovelies see how it works.

Do any of you trim your own bangs? Do you have any tips for the rest of us?

Obsession of the Week: Josie Maran Argan Color Stick

I’m in love. I read about Josie Maran’s Argan Color Stick while blog hopping not that long ago (I can’t for the life of me remember where, but if it was your blog, let me know!) and immediately put it on my Need to Try list.

I’m a sucker for multipurpose products, so when I read that it can be used on lips and cheeks (or even eyes if you’re feeling adventurous) I was intrigued. Add to that the fact that it’s gentle, eco-friendly, and helps women’s cooperative programs in Morocco, and I was completely sold.

When I found myself with a gift card to Sephora burning a hole in my pocket (thanks Maura!), it was at the top of my list of products to buy.

At $22 for .55 oz of product, it was definitely a little pricier than  my typical makeup purchase (I’m generally a drug store makeup girl). It’s fragrance free but has a sort of strange scent, which I’m assuming is a combination of beeswax, cocoa and some of the oils used in it.

The smell doesn’t linger though and I almost completely forgot about it once I put it on. It’s smooth and creamy and dewy looking and leaves your skin with a very natural looking glow.

I bought it in Petal Pink, which is a light and rosy color. I used it on my cheeks and lips and immediately felt like it made me look a little more fresh and awake (something which is completely necessary after only getting a few hours of sleep).

I definitely plan on keeping this one in my beauty product rotation–even if it means using it sparingly since I’m so cheap! 🙂

Magnetic Nail Polish

DIY nail trends are on fire right now! From crackle and matte polishes to nail polish strips there are so many fun new ways to give yourself a manicure.

Up next on my to-try list: magnetic polish!

Such a cool idea! You basically apply a base coat, apply a coat of the magnetic polish, and then hold the magnet (located on the bottle’s outer cap) to your wet nail. The result is a rippled effect that looks much more difficult than it is.

Now if only I could get a minute to myself to try it out…

Here are a few of the other ideas on my list via Pinterest, of course):

galaxy nails

lace nails

newsprint nails

glitter and nail pen art

What do you think of the DIY nail craze?

Rosy Cheeks How-To

OK. Let’s take a break from all of this fall talk for a second.

Instead, let’s talk about the makeup at the Band of Outsiders ready to wear Spring 2012 show.

I’m loving those flushed cheeks! So cute and fresh! It’s like the models went for a brisk walk on a nice crisp day (OK, I guess we can talk about fall).

Marcus Tondo / GoRunway.com

Love, love, love!

I was so in love that I attempted to do this look on my own cheeks (ignore the wet hair, weird angle and serious need for a brow grooming session… I’m a mom not a model!).

I could use a little more blending, but I think this look is really doable for real world girls. It can make a tired girl (and with only a couple of hours of sleep under my belt, that would be me!) look a little more awake.

Now you would think that putting on a little blush wouldn’t require a how-to. But if you’re like me and you don’t wear much makeup, a little insight (even if it’s in the form of I don’t want to look like that!) might save you some time.

So how did I do it? Well any makeup tip I’ve ever read concerning blush has said to smile and apply it to the apples of your cheeks in an upward motion.

After evening out my skin tone with a little liquid makeup (Covergirl TRUblend in soft honey, if you’re curious) to cover some of my lovely rosacea, I smiled wide and rubbed on some Covergirl and Olay Simply Ageless sculpting blush in rich cinnamon (it was on sale so I had to give it a try!). I then put the teensiest bit of Covergirl Cheekers Blush in rose silk on top (I know I’m starting to sound like a walking Covergirl advertisement but I swear I’m getting no compensation for this post. I just like me some Covergirl!).

What do you think? Are you into pink cheeks or are you not feeling it so much? There were girls with a variety of skin tones rocking this look on the runway and they all looked so fresh! Would you wear it?

In case you’re interested in the rest of my makeup:
Eyeliner: NYC Kohl brow/eyeliner in charcoal
Eyeshadow: I used my finger to apply Covergirl Cheekers Bronzer in Golden Tan
Mascara: Covergirl LashBlast Volume Blasting Mascara in black
Lips: Vaseline
