The Power of Lipstick

Ladies, let’s talk lips. More specifically, let’s talk about breaking down and slapping a little color on ’em.

I had a couple of different conversations recently with other bloggers about how much good a little dab of color will do ya when it comes to your lips. Somehow this one minor step can bring your whole look together.

Where’s the proof, you ask? Why, it’s right here:

This is what I looked like trying to get out of the house the other morning before adding color to my lips. Disheveled. Wild eyed. In need of chocolate before the clock even struck 10 am.

Add just a dab of Revlon Colorburst lip butter in Tutti Frutti and poof! I’m an actual human being ready to emerge into a world where I may just run into other grownups. My lip color is by no means overwhelming. It’s subtle and shimmery but it tells the outside world that I’m more than just a house frau with a herd of wee ones hanging from my teat. I mean, come on. It’s even a coral-y color, which is so on trend.

In case you were wondering, this trick also works well on young children:

To make sure the magic wasn’t just in the lip butter, Samantha put on Cover Girl Nature Luxe gloss in anemone. As you can see, it was just as magical.

She enjoyed it’s smoothness and the fact that it made her lips more red than mine (which she told me in a little bit of a “nanny nanny poo poo” voice).

Lest you think this trick is a magical cure all for all creatures, don’t get ahead of yourself. Babies are a whole different ball of wax.

Elyssa emerged from the application process still naked with a drooly chin, scraggly hair and Burt’s Bees breath. Some things are just a lost cause.

Get the Look: Kate Beckinsale

Kate Beckinsale has been looking amazing on her Total Recall publicity tour. Seriously amazing. My absolute favorite look so far has been an H&M/Diane von Furstenberg combo that she wore for interviews in Dublin.

While the skirt is kind of a weird length, it’s my only complaint about this look. I love the top tucked in and loosely draping over the waist of the fitted skirt. It’s a gorgeous silhouette. But my favorite part about this look is the color combo. It’s bright and cheery and so incredibly summery. I want it in my closet!

Are you as obsessed as I am?

Handmade Haven: Turquoise

Yesterday I was talking about how summertime always awakens my love for anything nautical. Today I want to talk turquoise. Like the nautical trend, my love for turquoise always intensifies in the summer and holds strong through the fall, where it mixes nicely with autumn’s jewel tones. My love for it always begins with stones and trickles out to the color in general.

There’s something very bohemian and carefree about turquoise. It makes me think of bare feet, grassy fields and long dresses. I have no idea why. But because of the vibe I always get from it, I’m particularly drawn to turquoise pieces that are handmade.

So, without further ado, here is my little handmade turquoise round up:

Fourth of July Party Inspiration

The Fourth of July crept up pretty quick this year. We’re having a game night at our house with some friends the night before and I’m thinking of getting all festive and nerdy with it.

Do you go all out for the Fourth? Here’s a little party inspiration if you do. If not, it’s awfully pretty to look at anyway, no?

pinwheels / straws / ice cream sandwich

sweet potato burger

kabobs

strawberry lemonade

dress / necklace / sweater / bracelets / wedges / sunglasses / head scarf

Coral Crush

I’ve never really been an orange-loving girl. You’ve got some water-colored pretties? Sign me right up. Neutrals? I’m with you. But orangey shades? No thanks. Until this year.

The year of Tangerine Tango have thrown this color into my face so often that (gasp!) I’m finding myself loving it. I’m starting small, by adding coral nail polish and lip color and then maybe–just maybe–I’ll go with something like one of these cute striped dresses.

1 ASOS skate dress :: 2 Proenza Schouler bag :: 3 Ella Moss swim dress :: 4 Revlon creme lipstick :: 5 Forever21 skirt :: 6 ASOS clutch :: 7 Anthropologie fedora :: 8 Felicity & Coco maxi :: 9 Essie nail polish :: 10 ModCloth dress :: 11 World Market infinity scarf

What are your thoughts on this orange explosion? Are you loving it or are you ready for a new color of the moment? Do you have any favorite coral pieces? I’m on the hunt for inspiration!

Fashion Inspired by Nail Art

I was cruising through my wedding blog feed the other day and came across a fab post on Grey Likes Weddings that paired photos of manicures with complementary bouquets. I thought that was a pretty genius idea and it immediately made me think about how all of the great nail art that’s out there right now can inspire fashion.

I put together two outfits that were designed specifically around awesome manicures I found around the internets:

nails / ASOS cami / Forever21 shorts / Dorothy Perkins necklace

nails / Kate Spade romper / Kate Spade bag / Sam Edelman sandal

What do you think? Would you pull together an outfit around your manicure or do you think that’s just crazy talk? I happen to think it’s kind of fun…

Red Carpet to Closet: Amanda Seyfried

If you read my blog with any regularity, you know I’m a huge red carpet geek. Any excuse to drool over pretty gowns and fab styling is OK by me.

What I (almost) like more is figuring out how I can translate my favorite looks into pieces that wouldn’t look terribly out of place in my own closet.  Last night’s Tony Awards gave me just that opportunity.

Amanda Seyfried / J. Crew dress / J. Crew belt / Marc Jacobs clutch / ASOS sandal

Amanda Seyfried strutted her stuff in a beaded Givenchy dress last night. I won’t lie, this look isn’t my favorite. The beading and change in color of the dress plus the bright belt is a bit much. What I absolutely love, however, is the combination of bluish-purple with bright pops of neon orange. So fresh and modern, don’t you think?

I decided to create a look that is inspired by Amanda Seyfried’s, but which is stripped of unnecessary extras. I focused on the color and I think the result is much cleaner and kind of perfect for summer. What do you think?

Style Muse: Jessica Alba

For me, the quintessential style icon for a mom on the go is Jessica Alba. With her easy breezy layers and bright pops of color, Jessica remains comfortable, stylish and on trend. She shows us busy mommas that having babies doesn’t mean we have to sacrifice our style.

With a few simple basics and some great accessories in your arsenal, you can easily (and affordably!) pull together a look like Jessica’s–no matter how jam packed your schedule may be.

Splendid tank / ModCloth scarf / Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses
ModCloth jeans / Nasty Gal blazer

Who is your style muse? Is there anyone you turn to for style inspiration?

Pretty Palette: Tangerine Tango and Teal

I love grabbing fashion inspiration from pretty photos. This particular photo is so dreamy and summery. It incorporates this year’s hot color (Tangerine Tango), pretty peach tones and gorgeous watery teals. I’m a sucker for the water hues…

Red Carpet to Closet: Jennifer Lawrence

Call me a dork, but I literally gasped when I first saw a photo of Jennifer Lawrence in the Prabal Gurung dress she wore to The Hunger Games premiere. This is not typically my kind of dress, but I absolutely love her in it! The cut, the fit, the seams–it’s seriously perfection!

I immediately started wondering if there was anything that even came close to it that a Real Girl could wear. I’m not really sure why this was a pressing question, considering I can’t imagine a single place I could have to go to where a sultry metallic dress would be a must, but I needed to know.

Splurge: ADAM, $200 / Steal: ASOS, $34

I’m sure people who know me will be shocked to hear this, but I’m kind of obsessed. Of course, the splurge is my favorite. I love the color and the paneling (as opposed to actual cutouts). But I can’t for the life of me figure out where I would wear a dress like this!

Where would you wear this dress?

While you think, I’m going to go do some lunges because the sight of Jennifer Lawrence’s butt in that dress is more than slightly depressing.
