Word: Balance

I’m a word nerd. I’m a word nerd who also likes curating pretty collections. So why not combine my favorite things into a column that collects both words and pretty images? Why I don’t mind if I do!

Handmade Haven: Summer Artwork

Samantha’s last day of summer camp was last Friday, which is making the onslaught of fall seem all the more real. I’m not really ready for cooler temperatures and structured schedules. I’m enjoying the easy breezy summer. I’m finally starting to embrace hair that can’t be tamed and dewy (aka sweaty) skin.

I’m pretty positive that once gloomy winter rears its head, I’m going to be grasping for any bit of summer I can find. That’s why my handmade finds today are all summer-themed works of art. I like the idea of hanging a little masterpiece in the house that I can look at when summer seems way too far away.

Any of these lovely finds would do just the trick…

Handmade Haven: Turquoise

Yesterday I was talking about how summertime always awakens my love for anything nautical. Today I want to talk turquoise. Like the nautical trend, my love for turquoise always intensifies in the summer and holds strong through the fall, where it mixes nicely with autumn’s jewel tones. My love for it always begins with stones and trickles out to the color in general.

There’s something very bohemian and carefree about turquoise. It makes me think of bare feet, grassy fields and long dresses. I have no idea why. But because of the vibe I always get from it, I’m particularly drawn to turquoise pieces that are handmade.

So, without further ado, here is my little handmade turquoise round up:

Brooklyn Thread

Golden Plume

Xtra Virgin

Delezhen Charmed

Blue Soul Designs

Nava Glazer

Handmade Haven: Picnic in the Park

June. How we got here so quickly, I’ll never understand.

My little Rosebud is wrapping up her school year. Her sixth birthday is taunting me from its spot two short rows down on my calendar. Summer vacation looms in that same spot and I’m wracking my brain to create an arsenal of options for my girl (who demands constant stimulation).

This weekend I’ll make it my mission to create a summer bucket list of sorts. A few must-do things that will keep my ladies occupied and me from losing my mind.

The first thing on my list is something that finds its way on my list every summer: a picnic. I want the sun on my cheeks, the grass in my toes, and my kids spilling drinks everywhere–though I wouldn’t mind leaving out the bugs that make Samantha shriek, thank you).

Handmade Haven: I’m Meeeeelting

Here in New York we’ve gone from springy to sweat-tastic pretty much overnight. My girls have sweat-matted hair and are sticky to the touch. We’re pretty much melty piles of mush.

While they cool off with applesauce and fruit pops, I’m on the hunt for all things melty.

1 Roots Jewelry ring :: 2 Play on Words print :: 3 Kevin Herdeman melt monster
4 Light & Spoon art :: 5 Jechory Glass Designs melted wine bottle cheese plate
6 Ellen Crimi-Trent print

Handmade Haven: Summer

1 Ella Gajewska Hats fedora :: 2 FantaSea Jewelry stacking rings :: 3 Golden Plume ring :: 4 Bayan Hippo cross body bag :: 5 Thread Etc. straw hat :: 6 Sandra Hagen caftan :: 7 Caroline Cochran fine art photo :: 8 Mama Bleu Designs clutch

I couldn’t possibly decide which of these pieces is my favorite. Looking at each of them is like a mini escape from reality (and who doesn’t need that every now and then?). I can almost hear the crash of the waves and the sea breeze on my sandy skin. If I could jump into this collection you better believe I would!

Shopping for a Baby Girl

My sister is about to have a baby. In fact, she’s actively trying not to have a baby as we speak. She’s not due until the beginning of July, but the little nugget is already trying to force her way out of the uterus. Our fingers are crossed that she stays in there a little longer so that her lungs have some more time to develop–and so that I can finally throw my sister a surprise baby shower (my nephew was six weeks early, making his grand entrance before the baby shower).

All of this baby chatter has me obsessing over teensy tiny baby fingers and toes and all of the cuteness that goes along with having a baby girl. It was the perfect excuse to window shop (not that I really need an excuse!).

My sister is a fashionista with an inclination towards edgy, gothic details (check out her blog to see what I mean. Not that I’m biased or anything, but she’s kind of awesome). It can be a little tough to find pieces for a baby girl that work with her aesthetic. I went on a hunt and came up with a few pieces that I think she would love.

1 Willow’s Garden baby mermaid photo prop ::  2 Pearls & Popcorn shirt :: 3 Cole Haan moccasin :: 4 Petunia Pickle blanket :: 5 The Poppy Tree mermaid print :: 6 Kate Mack bikini :: 7 Truly Sanctuary onesie :: 8 Little Bits Chic headband

All this itty bitty baby chatter is starting to give me a little baby fever (not that my littlest munchkin is much bigger). Here’s to hoping the newest little addition will take care of that for me for the time being!

Handmade Haven: Floral

I promised a new column and here it is!

I’m a little obsessed with handmade items. They’re unique and one-of-a-kind and made with so much love. I also love to support small businesses, so it only made sense to start a column that celebrates handmade pieces.

Each week I’m going to choose a word and showcase handmade pieces related to that word. This week, I’ve got flowers on the brain so it’s all about floral.

1 Hopeless bra and knicker set :: 2 After Images iPhone case :: 3 Blue Birds Fly Boutique turban :: 4 Lana Stepul dress :: 5 Kailo Chic clutch :: 6 Jamie Lundberg stationery set :: 7 Kristin Larson Jewelry necklace

Next week’s word: summertime. If you have handmade pieces that relate to the word in any way email me at jennifergarrydesigns@gmail.com for a chance to be featured in next week’s spotlight!

Vintage Love

I’m having a little bit of a love affair with all things vintage at the moment. Blame it on Mad Men, blame it on being knee deep in weddings (where vintage is all the rage). Wherever the blame lies, I’m grateful for it. Vintage pieces are (sometimes) cheap, nice to the environment, and full of history. How can you go wrong?

1 trench / 2 skirt / 3 espadrilles / 4 embroidered dress / 5 party dress

Some people love vintage. Some people get all skeeved out at the thought of it and consider it other people’s trash. What do you think?
